Solid Rod Ends

Solid rod ends (also called rod eyes or heim joints) are used in suspension links, steering and chassis components where a pivoting, adjustable joint is needed. Unlike a standard bushed joint, a solid rod end has a hardened ball inside a one-piece housing for minimal play.

They're specified by bore size (the hole through the ball, such as 1/2" or 3/4") and thread size (such as 3/4" or 5/8"), and some are right-hand threaded specifically. Width across the housing also varies, so check both bore and thread, plus thread handedness, against the part you're replacing.

Frequently asked questions

What do the two sizes in a rod end's name mean?

The first size is usually the bore, the hole through the centre where a bolt or pin passes, and the second is the thread size on the shank that screws into your rod or bracket.

Does it matter if the rod end is right-hand or left-hand threaded?

Yes. Right-hand and left-hand threaded rod ends are not interchangeable, so check which your application needs, especially where left and right-hand ends are used together for adjustment on the same rod.

What's the benefit of a solid rod end over a bushed joint?

A solid rod end uses a hardened ball in a one-piece housing, giving a tighter, more precise joint with less play than a rubber or poly bushed alternative.
